In Great Measure

William Shakespeare was clearly ahead of his time with his play Measure for Measure, which has just opened the new season of the Ensemble Theatre Company at the New Vic.

Creatively directed by Jonathan Fox, the production is considered one of the bard’s most beguiling plays, dramatizing one of his more infamous bargains – a young women’s virginity in exchange for her brother’s life.

The story of tyrannical authority, sexual power, and gender politics is specially resonant in today’s #MeToo culture.

Lily Gibson as novice nun Isabella plays the role with great passion, while battling the Duke, Abdul-Khalid Murtadha, politician Angelo, Richard Baird, and her condemned brother Claudio, Trevor Peterson.

A great kickoff for the latest season. It runs through Sunday, October 20.
