Herbie, a 3-year-old-plus Retriever mix, never met a tennis ball he didn't like. Bonnie Baker, a DAWG volunteer, says Herbie always catches a ball on the fly, with nary a miss. He drops the slobbery blob right at your feet (or in your lap, if you happen to be sitting in a lawn chair reading the paper). He then takes a few steps back and eagerly waits for you to throw the ball again. By the time you finish reading the last page, Herbie will be pooped and ready to sit quietly by your side.

Herbie is sweet, affectionate, low key (except when he sees a tennis ball), well-mannered and knows basic obedience. He is good with children and other dogs and will make a great addition to any family.

If you're looking for a new companion, stop by the Dog Adoption and Welfare Group (DAWG) to meet Herbie. The private, non-profit facility is located at 5480 Overpass Road, off Patterson Avenue. Call 681-0561.
